Berlin Senate Department for Economic Affairs, Energy and Public Enterprises signed a partnership with the University of California, Berkeley on March 21st, 2024 to work on advanced digital innovation for healthcare in an aging society.

The focus of the new partnership is on building a network between innovative companies, start-ups and research institutions from the Berlin metropolitan region and California. The aim of the transatlantic network is to promote the transfer of knowledge and social and digital innovations to improve the health and living conditions of older people – and to enable digital participation for an increasingly aging society. The partnership and their first joint project entitled “Against Loneliness and for Digital Participation for Older Adults” was initiated by Professor Thomas Schildhauer, Director of the Digital Urban Center for Aging and Health (DUCAH) in Berlin, and Dr. David Lindeman, Executive Director of CITRIS Health at the Center for Information Technology Research in the Interest of Society and the Banatao Institute (CITRIS). The two institutes will act as project leaders. As part of the cooperation, both sides have agreed to support the exchange of researchers, start-ups and small and medium-sized enterprises and to hold joint workshops and symposia. The initiative is being funded by the Berlin Senate Department for Economic Affairs, Energy and Public Enterprises with 200,000 euros as part of its internationalization program.
