Laura Attanasio

Did you always have a passion for Art? What path led you to your current position as Senior Director of Pace in Berlin?

As with many in the art world, my passion for art has been a driving force throughout my career. My journey to the current position as Senior Director of Pace in Berlin has been shaped by my dedication to promoting and supporting artists and their work.

I have had the privilege of working with remarkable talents and fostering artistic growth in various capacities, which eventually led me to this esteemed position at Pace Gallery.

Pace recently announced the opening of its new space in Berlin in June 2023. What motivated the decision to expand the gallery to Berlin? Can you share some insights into the strategic factors that influenced the location choice?

The decision to expand to Berlin was influenced by several factors. Berlin’s vibrant art scene and cultural diversity make it an attractive destination for artists, with half a dozen gallery artists already living in Berlin.

The city’s reputation as a hub for contemporary art and its dynamic arts community align with Pace Gallery’s mission to engage with diverse artistic expressions. Building off the success of our galleries in London and Geneva, we are excited to continue expanding our reach in Europe and further contribute to the thriving art scene in Berlin.

Are there any specific types of art or artistic movements that Pace Gallery aims to promote and showcase in its new Berlin space?

Pace Gallery has a long history of promoting and showcasing a diverse range of art and artistic movements. We have lots of exciting plans in place, and we look forward to making them public soon.

In the meantime, we are dedicating much of our time to focus engaging with the artists, institutions, and collectors on the ground in Berlin, who have been very welcoming to Pace and enthusiastic about our presence in the city.

What are the long-term goals and aspirations for the gallery’s expansion to Berlin? How do you envision the gallery evolving and making an impact on both the local and international art scenes in the coming years?

Our long-term goals for the gallery’s expansion to Berlin revolve around creating a vibrant and  thriving artistic community. We aspire to be an integral part of Berlin’s art scene and contribute to the city’s cultural dialogue, and we aim to make a positive impact both locally and on the international stage.

Can you recommend what type of partners are helpful in expanding to Berlin or any other pertinent advice to US companies exploring the Berlin market?

For US companies exploring the Berlin market, it is essential to take the time to understand the local culture, business practices, and the unique aspects of the scene in Berlin. Building strong partnerships with local galleries, institutions, and stakeholders can be instrumental in establishing a successful presence. Additionally, being open to collaboration and actively engaging with the local community will contribute to a meaningful and mutually beneficial expansion.
